Module Aims

On successful completion of this module, the learner will understand public health in a global context and explore the impact of inequality on human health and wellbeing, using example communicable and non-communicable diseases. The diverse drivers of health inequality will be analysed, including, but not limited to, biological, environmental, economic, and political factors. This will be achieved through in-depth critical engagement with primary datasets, which will be analysed, visualised, and interpreted to gather evidence to better understand global health inequality.

The module will explore potential solutions to these issues, and learners will evaluate the successes and limitations of interventions to reduce global health inequality. Ultimately, learners will be equipped with the tools to critically investigate global health issues and arrive at conclusions that are underpinned and supported by reliable data analysis.

In engaging with the module appropriately, students will fully achieve the following level-appropriate Behaviour Domains of the USW Graduate Attributes:

Communication: Behaviour 1, 2, 3

Innovation and Enterprise: Behaviour 1, 2, 3

Project Management: Behaviour 1,2.

Digital Literacy: Behaviour 1,2,3

Leadership: Behaviour: 1,2,3

Commercial awareness: Behaviour 1,2,3

The Capabilities associated with these behaviours are found in the Graduate Attributes table at the end of the descriptor.

Content Summary

Topics covering global health inequalities (morbidity and mortality). Social Aspects of Health will be covered where relevant, as well as economic and political drivers of inequality.

Health promotion as a tool to drive reduction in inequality, as well as case studies of successful interventions will be discussed, as well as the limitations of such changes. Both communicable and Non-Communicable disease will be used as case studies. Reliable sources of primary data will be analysed, and appropriate statistical and analytical and data presentation tools will be incorporated into the module.
