Module Aims

The aim of this module is to develop the leadership and change management skills in the student and to facilitate transition from student to registered practitioner, being able to participate within the multi-disciplinary team along with the constant need for change and improvement to meet its evolving needs.

To enable students to critically evaluate and lead change in Physiotherapy practice and services. Through initiating, designing, and implementing research informed quality improvement and managing change, students will learn skills and knowledge to enable them to improve services and drive practice forward.

Content Summary

This module will result in a capstone project, utilising the students’ abilities to use their evidence and research-based practice (developed throughout the course) to design, implement, evaluate, and disseminate a quality improvement research project.

Leading and managing change in physiotherapy practice, developing effective compassionate leadership skills and co-ordinating care within the wider interdisciplinary and multiagency teams.

Understanding the need to ensure equality, diversity and inclusion within own leadership role.

Understanding and exploring the process of quality improvement and change management and the need to work collaboratively with other agencies and disciplines to provide optimum, evidence-based physiotherapy services, utilising current digital and other technologies to enhance provision.

Understanding the problem from a range of perspectives, with a particular emphasis on using and interpreting data.

Exploring and utilising ways of working collaboratively and co-producing with users of services and stakeholders to develop effective improvement strategies, prioritising the needs of the local population.

Strategic vision for research within the physiotherapy profession and work settings. Local and national policy drivers for evidence-based practice, quality improvement and research.

Sharing feedback and learning from positive and adverse outcomes and experiences.

Locating and accessing best local, national, and international evidence relevant to health, care, policy, and physiotherapy practice including evaluating the importance of research in physiotherapy, locally, nationally, and internationally.

Critical reflection on practice, identifying gaps in service provision or practice. Critical reflection of adverse events, including identifying, reporting, and learning from near misses, critical incidents, major incidents, and serious adverse events.

Research governance, including ethics, data protection and confidentiality.

Systematic information searches, selection of relevant information, critically appraising and synthesising new knowledge.

Setting up a small-scale research, audit, or quality improvement project

Applying research, audit, and service evaluation findings to inform physiotherapy practice including, effective team working, safety, and quality of care and PDSA cycles.

Develop skills in relation to acquisition of strength, resourcefulness and flexibility needed to work in stressful and demanding situations and develop strategies to contribute to safe and effective physiotherapy practice.

Development and application of the skills required to support and supervise students and others in the provision of physiotherapy, promoting reflection, providing constructive feedback, and evaluating and documenting their performance.

Management of change – models of change – effective compassionate leadership in implementing change.

Application of compassionate leadership and Malcomess Care Aims Framework in practice

Understanding the importance of ‘Civility’ in physiotherapy
