Module Aims

This module aims to provide the student with an understanding in wrap around, Holistic Care of the Perioperative Patient. This module will equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge to plan for and effectively treat perioperative patients holistically throughout their journey. The module will introduce students to key legislation involved in the care of the patient within the perioperative journey.

Content Summary

This module will introduce students to the concepts of compassionate practice develop concepts around compassionate care for the patient engaged within the perioperative process.
Theoretical Topics to Include:
Patient optimisation and pre-habilitation
Patient health and well-being within the surgical care pathway including psychological well-being.
The effect of genomics on pre-assessment for surgery and anaesthesia.
Considerations of patients and issues around their family and socioeconomic status and other factors that may impact care and their ability to engage with healthcare.
Understanding pre-operative care of the surgical patient within hospitals (elective, day case and emergency).
Tackling patient-centred and logistical problems within healthcare delivery.
The role of pre-assessment clinic and the multidisciplinary team
Infection prevention and control in pre-operative care
Pre-operative clinical investigations and their uses in planning care.
Development of Holistic Care Skills:
History taking relevant to the anaesthetic and surgical practice including airway, cardiovascular, neurological and psychological assessments
Applying protocols in the reporting of concerns of both staff and patients.
Dealing with difficult conversations and challenging behaviours within perioperative practice.
• Understanding and promoting patient autonomy and dignity within perioperative care.
The role of non-verbal communication in healthcare.
Effectively dealing with communication challenges within preoperative practice across a variety of patient ages and conditions
Communication challenges within hospital settings across the multidisciplinary team in the pre-operative setting
Legal and Professional Topics within the perioperative journey to Include:
Risk evaluation and management linked with the pre-operative care of the perioperative patient.
Introduction to clinical governance including confidentiality of patient information.
Introduction to ethical issues within perioperative medicine
The importance of good documentation and recordkeeping within healthcare
The role of technology in perioperative care and issues associated with its introduction
