This module will develop the skills and knowledge to recognise health, social and environmental issues, and the impact that these have on health and well-being exploring the role of the Operating Department Practitioner and other professionals in instigating change to a more inclusive and participatory society. This will be explored in relation to public health, health prevention and reducing health inequalities and disparities, in individuals, their wider families and communities and populations.
Topics will include:
The ‘healthy’ practitioner. Looking at evidence-based research and learning from other professions to develop healthy working practices.
Environmental impact of the perioperative process.
Identifying the role of ODPs within health promotion looking into health and wellbeing surrounding perioperative care and the impacts of negative health behaviours on anaesthetic and surgical care.
The wider determinants of health and wellbeing- demography, social determinants, choice, cultural influences, inequalities and promoting a more inclusive and participatory society.
Prevention, population health and public health data to understand current societal/health/wellbeing challenges.
Integrated health and wellbeing – working inter-professionally to promote health and wellbeing.
The impact of illness and wellness on mental, physical, and social well-being for the perioperative patient.
Exploration of public health and wellbeing legislation and implications for contemporary Operating Department Practice e.g.,

Models of health and wellbeing promotion approaches, place-based approaches, strengthening community action, community development and asset-based approaches. Facilitating behaviour change in the context of personalised care using evidence-based approaches such as making every contact count (MECC), motivational interviewing and supporting self-management.
Supporting personalised care conversations, including behaviour change and social prescribing.
Health education, health protection, public health, delivering sustainable and effective preventative health care services locally, nationally, and internationally.
Delivering fair, equitable and inclusive health and well-being promotion and prevention programmes.
Developing qualitative and quantitative research skills for evidence-based practice.
