Module Aims
The aim of this module is to develop the leadership and change management skills in the student and to facilitate transition from student to registered practitioner, being able to participate within the muti-disciplinary team in the perioperative environment, along with the constant need for change and improvement to meet its evolving needs.
Content Summary
The ODP student needs to apply appropriate leadership skills and techniques in the management of people and resources. The influence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors the necessity to contribute and responds constructively to change.
Leadership and Management Topics to include:
The ODPs role in adaptation to changing scenarios and demonstration of problem-solving skills in complex and unpredictable situations.
Critical evaluation of own role within personal sphere of responsibility. Identification and management of conflicts and challenging behaviours in different settings.
Demonstrating the capability to act autonomously and collaboratively, within multidisciplinary care teams. Managing and prioritising workload effectively within the multidisciplinary team
Leading and managing Operating Department Practice, developing effective compassionate leadership skills and co-ordinating care within the wider interdisciplinary and multiagency teams.
Develop skills in relation to acquisition of strength, resourcefulness and flexibility needed to work in stressful and difficult situations and develop strategies to contribute to safe and effective Operating Department Practice.
Management of change – models of change – effective compassionate leadership in implementing change. To gain understanding of the management theories of change and be able to implement them.
Application of compassionate leadership and Malcomess Care Aims Framework in practice
Considering influences of leadership, management, autonomous and collaborative working, organisation, users and change improvement itself, supported through analysis, synthesis and evaluation of evidence-based research and experience.
Effective leadership and management outside of healthcare practice and its applications to the perioperative team.
Understanding the need to ensure equality, diversity and inclusion within own leadership role.
Research and Improvement Topics to Include:
Understanding and exploring the process of change management and the need to work collaboratively with other agencies and disciplines to provide optimum, evidence based Operating Department Practice services, utilising current digital and other technologies to enhance provision.
Exploring and utilising ways of working collaboratively with users of services and stakeholders to develop effective improvement strategies for quality and safety, sharing feedback and learning from positive and adverse outcomes and experiences.
Applying research, audit, and service evaluation findings to inform Operating Department Practice. including, effective team working, safety, and quality of care and PDSA cycles.
Locating and accessing best local, national, and international evidence relevant to health, care, policy and Operating Department Practice. including evaluating the importance of research in ODP practice, locally, nationally and internationally.
Critical reflection of adverse events, including identifying, reporting, and learning from near misses, critical incidents, major incidents, and serious adverse events.

The Procurement process and the management of resources within the NHS.
