Module Aims

The aim of this module is to:
• To develop students’ understanding of the research process and explore the theoretical underpinnings of social research
• Develop an understanding of the process and outputs of a literature review
• Recognise the key characteristics of qualitative and quantitative research methods
• Broaden and deepen students’ understanding of approaches to research appropriate to their work situation and subject of study.
To develop students’ skills in research, data analysis, critical analysis and analytical thinking.

Content Summary

• The history of educational and social research

• The nature and purpose of research; different types of research (quantitative qualitative, mixed methods, developmental, practice based)

• Ethics considerations in research with children and young people

• Students will learn about research methods for Working with children and young people to include the research design process, reviewing literature, research questions, SMART principles in research and research study design.

• Students will also learn how to evaluate and interpret a variety of data sets, critically discuss findings, draw conclusions, develop an argument and make recommendations for practice.
