Module Aims

This module explores representative texts from the work of William Shakespeare and other writers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It aims to develop students’ awareness of the history, development, and cultural significance of literary forms, styles, and themes in English, and to enhance their critical and communication skills.

Content Summary

The module will examine a selection of drama and poetry by William Shakespeare, which may include: As You Like It, King Lear, The Tempest and the Sonnets. Other poets represented may include: Thomas Wyatt, Henry Howard, Philip Sidney, Amelia Lanyer, Anne Bradstreet, John Donne, and George Herbert. Prose works studied may include texts by Rachel Speght, John Lyly, Francis Bacon, and Thomas Browne. The content reflects the quality, variety and vitality of the literature produced in the English Renaissance and examines its various literary and historical contexts.
