Module Aims

Students on this module will explore the major literatures of the nineteenth century, to deepen and refine their understanding of the contexts surrounding literary production in the period. T&L approaches will encourage development of their ability to combine close literary analysis with researched secondary and discursive contextual materials in making pertinent and well-justified analytical arguments in appropriately expressed and presented academic prose.

Content Summary

The module introduces students to some of the major issues associated with English Literature in the nineteenth century. Students will begin by exploring the different literary forms and characteristics of Romanticism, moving on to Realism, Gothic fiction, the writing of Empire, and the literature of the fin-de-siècle. Attention will also be paid to the poetry of the period. All of the texts chosen for study will be considered for their representation of contextual issues, such as gender, race and class, as well as their imaginative engagement with the broader historical forces of which they are a part.
