Module Aims

The module aims to enhance employability by training students to register, appraise and respond with professionalism and confidence to different kinds of language-use in ‘live’ workplace environments, situations and interactions. Students will learn to identify when and where to apply transferable skills acquired through prior and ongoing Award-based T&L experiences in ‘live’ working interactions and/or environments. They will learn to: engage with sensitivity, professionalism and confidence in relevant working practices, situations and/or environments; reflect with appropriate critical or theoretical sophistication on relevant skills, practices, experiences, situations and/or environments including the classroom. They will be familiarized with relevant legislative/regulatory, and other formal or conventional processes, procedures and practices (eg HSE and DPR) framing the conduct of interpersonal transactions in professional life; research, produce and deliver an accurately presented, appropriately illustrated and justified research/practice-based project of appropriate length in timely fashion; analyse, evaluate and reflect critically on their professional outputs, their interpersonal and their communication skills; deal confidently and competently with professional interactions and communications in the workplace and other public/community environments; present and conduct themselves in an appropriately professional manner in a range of formal, professional, public and/or other environments; and work independently in seeing a professional project from inception to completion.

Content Summary

The module will provide the necessary skills for students to feel confident in a range of professional settings and contexts. The workplace-focused content will depend on individual students’ long term aims and ambitions.
Students working towards the graduate TESOL Certificate, which is completed outside of the degree assessment requirements, will have the industry standard knowledge and observed practice to enter the workplace teaching English as a second language.
Other students may conduct and draw on immersive and ‘live’ experiences; or produce a more creative, critical and/or theoretically reflective response to the T&L programme. Supervisory support will facilitate and guide students through the production and evaluation of their chosen area of study and research, practice-led or not.
The module is designed so that students can allocate 70 hours to an appropriate professional practice. We recognise that, in practice, employers and projects may offer fewer hours, and where necessary we will agree appropriate alternative activities with students, such as relevant career workshops, live briefs, classroom activities or formative assessment opportunities.
