Module Aims

The module aims to consider the place of ancient texts and their underlying mythologies in contemporary culture (especially in the creative arts and industries such as fiction and cinema), and to encourage students to think in critically-informed ways about aspects of modern society.

Content Summary

Drawing on three mythological strands widely used in modern cultural productions – ancient near eastern/biblical, classical, and Celtic – the module examines a selection of ancient texts in translation. The focus is on the sociocultural functions of narrative (in fiction and cinema) as it emerged from myth, and on how myth is used and understood in the scientific age. Texts studied may include: The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Book of Genesis, The Book of Job, The Odyssey, The Mabinogion, and ‘Sir Orfeo’. Cinematic renderings of mythology considered may include: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), Troy (2004), King Arthur (2004).
