Module Aims

  1. To explore the role of development with reference to built and natural environments.

  2. To conceptually introduce urban development through its broader discourse.

  3. To explore the role of spatial planning and its influence on people and place.

Content Summary

The module begins with an overview of development from a national to a local scale, reflecting the ways in which space and the built environment evolve over time. It considers how development is constrained and challenged through social, political and geographical processes. The module will refer to spatial planning rhetoric throughout, with reference to key UK legislation.

The module will explore the broader discourse of development with reference to initiatives, visions and thinkers of the twentieth and twenty-first century. It will incorporate associated development processes, including conflict, redevelopment and regeneration, place and placemaking.

It will conclude with a focus on public consultation and involvement, exploring opportunities for individuals and communities to participate in the development process.
