Module Aims

This module aims to introduce students to the basic skillset required to be successful within the events industry as a technician.

The module introduces correct and safe ways of working, ensuring all future learning throughout is conducted in-line with the correct ‘safety first’ mindset, and to encourage the questioning of practises.

To gain knowledge and understanding of overarching legislation and regulations that affect the live events industry, including knowledge of working rights and welfare.

To introduce technical terminology used within theatre environments.

Content Summary

Working at height; an introduction to the safe use of ladders, access towers and discussion of other working at height options.

Personal Protective Equipment; its purpose, role in the risk hierarchy, options and provision.

Legislation and liability; its roles and which insurances and legislation students need awareness of, including but not limited to: Personal Liability Insurance, Provisional and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations, Noise at Work Regulations.

Risk Assessment and Method Statements, how to conduct them, their purpose and need.

Welfare on site, including the University; knowledge of working rights and welfare rights.

Rigging Terminology and kit introductions, focusing on theatrical style rigging.

Electrical Terminology and kit introductions, focussing on small temporary electrical systems.

This module contains a six-week immersive learning element.
