Module Aims

Introduce you to the exciting field of infographics and develop an understanding of its role and potential applications within 21st century design practice.

Provide you with core knowledge, skills, and techniques to solve information-based design challenges.

Encourage experimentation and the development of your design process as you explore and co-ordinate information within visual formats

Content Summary

This module introduces you to the power of data as you explore the exciting world of information graphics, or ‘infographics,’ an area of design which is ever-increasing due to the large amounts of data we produce every day. To design for information has become a fundamental ‘pillar’ within a 21st century designers skillset, allowing designers to communicate complex data sets or messages to audiences in an easy to understand and visually exciting formats.

You will explore how commercially practicing designers collect, analyse, and interpret data to build impactful pieces of information design as you undertake an exciting information-based design challenge.

This module develops your understanding of what it means to communicate visually and how information can be used as a strategic and effective vehicle for communication. Whether it is statistics, a digital billboard, a news article, maps or even signage, you will explore how designers use information graphics to engage, inform and persuade an audience.

This module will provide you with an understanding of the skills, tools and techniques needed to present data through a visually compelling narrative. Through practice-based learning, you will be encouraged to use basic design research methods to collect appropriate types of data which should become the basis of your conceptualisation and experimentation as you explore how designers present structure, organise and present information to an audience.

This module develops key digital literacy, project management, communication skills that are utilised throughout the rest of the course, as you develop a commercial understanding of information design and its potential application.

The module lecture programme provides a series of taught, workshops methods and tutorials that explore core concepts and principles used by designers to solve a range of information-based challenges, encouraging you to apply these to own project.
