Module Aims

The aim of the module is to provide the student with advanced knowledge an understanding of of the legal, regulatory and policy issues of International and Comparative Media Law.

The module will enable students  appreciate and undertake a critical consideration of the nature and role of the law regulating the media.

Content Summary

Content Summary:

The module will cover the following indicative content:

Identifying contemporary themes within the subject (for example the freedom of expression and the adjunct of a free press, the relevance of a media to democracy and the internet and democratisation) and their relevance to international perspectives of media operation and regulation.

A consideration of the global dimensions of media practice.

Restrictions to media freedom (for example, engaging reputational and privacy rights) and a consideration of the different approaches extant in different legal regimes (for example using case studies of European and US approaches to restrictions of media freedom in this respect).

Governmental and non-governmental control of the media (for example, media and broadcast regulation).

The use of media in the context of, and international approaches to, regulation of ‘hate speech’.
