Module Aims

The aim of the module is to provide the student with an understanding of Equality and Rights and the impact on society in England and Wales and further afield.

The module will provide a basis for study for students to;

Examine the philosophical debate on the existence and the meaning of discrimination and the philosophy behind the shift in official language to equality.

Provide students with a critical appreciation of the legal rules and principles which aim to protect against discrimination at domestic, European and international level.

Explores topical issues in relation to freedom of expression and other expressive rights, for example, the right to manifest religion or belief, the right to vote and the right to peaceful assembly.

The module provides a wide-ranging critical examination of issues relating to equality, rights and the impact on society and will cover the following indicative content:

What is equality?

The legal rights framework

Exploration of protected groups

Positive action relating to equality law.

Socio-economic equality

Freedom of expression and other expressive rights.
