Module Aims
This module will introduce students to social pedagogy and encourage them to develop a broad understanding of how social pedagogy approaches can be applied in work in the social care sector with children, young people, families and communities.
The module will focus on how students can apply the values, principles and standards of social pedagogy in a variety of professions, including, health and social care, social work, and working with children, young people, families and communities.
It will focus on the key principles, values and individual skills required to work within the sector, which includes legislation that promotes the rights and well-being of children, young people, families and communities, social pedagogy and person-centred approaches within practice.
Content Summary
The module content will provide an introduction into the principles and values of social pedagogy when working with children, young people, families and communities in the Social Care Sector. This will include a brief overview of the following:
Social Pedagogy approaches, theories and standards (SPPA, 2022);
Person-Centred Approaches;
Strength-based approaches;
Development of children, young people, families and communities;
An introduction to ‘care’ and working with others;
An introduction to equality and diversity when working with children, young people, families and communities considering cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds;
Working in partnership with children, young people, families and communities;
Universal design;
‘What matters to you?’ conversations;
Transitions and its impact upon children, young people, families and communities;
An introduction to Safeguarding children and young people.
Guests lectures from partners such as: Police, Community nurse, health visitor, social services, family intervention and prevention services teams, education, ALN teams, Well-being teams.
