Module Aims

To support and develop student’s skills and abilities to ensure they are able to plan, manage and deliver good quality social care practice.

To examine a range of systems and processes that are designed to enhance the quality of social care practice, ensuring organisational policies and procedures are considered and implemented and include mapping their work to the Social Pedagogy Standards (SPPA, 2022).

Content Summary

The module will briefly consider the local, social and political context of social care practice gaining an overview of external factors that are informing and driving policy and practice, such as accountability systems and processes; the organisational context and managerial systems and theories that inform practice.

The module is designed to enhance levels of critical awareness and understanding of social care and the implications of Social Policy, New Public Management and its impact upon the design, delivery, and management of work with young people.

Students will examine and analyse the theoretical concepts of management, which includes a range of management tools and practical resources that underpins and informs current practice.

Students will build upon their knowledge of the principles and values of social care practice at level 4, whilst having the opportunity to gain practical skills, knowledge and abilities in the following areas:
• Planning and Evaluating work with young people;
• Models for measuring outcomes and distance travelled;
• Referral systems and processes, information sharing protocols;
• Common assessment framework (CAF) / assessing the needs of young people;
• Report writing and funding applications;

LO1 Students will be able to identify and analyse the theoretical and practical concepts of New Public Management themes within a social care setting
LO2 Student will develop skills in evaluating the impact and effectiveness of their work and awareness of how to use quality indicators when supporting young people in a social care setting in line with the Health and Social Care (Quality and Engagement) (Wales) Act 2020 (Welsh Government, 2019).
