Module Aims

To critically analyse contemporary social issues which impact on practice within health and social care. This issue can be one that is work or placement related which merits further research to inform person centred outcomes.

To encourage independent thinking and learning of a contemporary social issue.

Content Summary

This module has been designed to introduce health, wellbeing and social care students to various ways of conceptualising and understanding social issues, with an added focus on approaches to explaining social issues, and in examining the ways in which social issues are constructed and addressed within contemporary society.

Rooted in a number of key social issues discussed in the module, the following are some of the cross-cutting themes that students will be expected to explore:

Understanding of the social world, and its relevance in shaping how social issues have been understood and explored

The links between social issues and the health, wellbeing and social care professional

Social policy and its relevance, interpretation and impact on practice at operational, strategic, local and national level.
