Module Aims

To facilitate the competent use of critical reflective knowledge and skill applied to theoretically informed, professional and ethical practice.

To develop an understanding of a range of theoretical constructs and discourse required to underpin contemporary counselling practice.

To facilitate the development of a range of essential counselling skills and qualities, within a pluralistic framework of counselling theory.

Content Summary

The Pluralistic Framework:

An Integrative approach optimizing flexibility and collaboration in therapy, grounded in a clear ethical stance and set of principles.

Attitudinal Qualities:

Warmth; attunement; Person-Centred Core Conditions.

Skills:

Active attending, listening and intentional responding; focusing and therapeutic process; communicating core values; working with thoughts, behaviours and emotions; metatherapeutic communication and shared decision making.

Theory:

Pluralistic practice and integration.

Introduction to theory and values of Person-Centred, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural therapy.

Social justice – inclusivity, diversity and difference in the provision of counselling and psychotherapy

Professional Practice:

Contracting, assessing risk and safeguarding and Legislation.

Sociocultural and Social Justice competence.

Orientation Placement (minimum 40 hours).

*In order to meet the Professional Practice criteria for the course it is a requirement that you attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all timetabled lectures, meetings and other learning activities arranged as part of this module.
