Module Aims
To provide an overview of the philosophical, developmental and social context of working with children.
To demonstrate skills necessary to establish a safe therapeutic relationship with children using age-appropriate communication and counselling resources.
Content Summary
Theory:
Philosophical underpinnings e.g. Social Construction
Child Developmental theory e.g. Vygotsky, Piaget, Bandura and Erikson.
The child in society: different views about childhood (e.g. cultural and historical) and how these impact on development and wellbeing.
Humanistic approaches to counselling children, e.g. Axline and the importance of play and creativity.
Skills:
Establish a therapeutic relationship using empathy.
Ability to use age-appropriate resources to facilitate counselling with children building on Axline’s theory on Therapeutic Play and Gestalt Play Therapy.
Adjust communication styles to suit that of the client in setting up a contract and building a therapeutic relationship.
Being responsive to and working with verbal and non-verbal communication.
Understanding the values and interests of children.
Anchoring and witnessing.
Ethical awareness and ability to recognise dilemmas and/or safeguarding issues and how to respond to these.
*In order to meet the Professional Practice criteria for the course it is a requirement that you attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all timetabled lectures, meetings and other learning activities arranged as part of this module.
