Module Aims
For students to understand, and demonstrate knowledge of, the ethical, theoretical, practical and methodological principles and approaches which underpin research in the fields of working with and for children and young people.
For students to be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to plan research and to demonstrate vision, originality, reflective practice and reflexivity when doing so.
For students to be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to lead and project manage including the identification of need, funding bid writing, income generation, resource management, monitoring and evaluation.
Content Summary
Introduction to the module, assessment overview and briefings (pre-recorded input), module aims and learning outcomes and indicative content.
What is research and why do we do it?
Research approaches; the epistemological basis of differing methodological approaches, for example, interpretive, positivist, and feminist.
Thinking through research problems to lead to an appropriate methodological response.
Research topics – thinking ahead to Dissertation and Major Project.
Involving young people in research, data collection and consultation.
Data collection tools: questionnaires, survey, interviews, observation and sampling.
Data analysis- analysing qualitative data; analysing quantitative data.
Research design: participatory methods
Research design: ethical considerations and processes.
Research design: lit reviews, methodology and methods.
Creative methodologies and methods
