Module Aims

The overall aim of the module is to give students an effective set of tools to analyse key issues in the contemporary social world in relation to equity, equality and diversity.??? 

The objectives of the module are to:? 

  • ?Provide an overview of the impact of inequalities and ideals such as equity and equality of opportunity 

  • Develop a detailed understanding of the impact of inequalities and unconscious bias on people’s everyday lives.  ? 

  • Identify protected characteristics and how to meet individuals’ needs   

  • Analyse the law and policies in relation to protected characteristics, such as the Equality Act 2010 and the All Wales Anti-Racist Action Plan 

  • Contrast models of opportunity 

  • Examine examples of where policy works and where it fails (e.g. the Stephen Lawrence case; Alex Roca, disabled marathon runner)

Content Summary

The module provides students with an understanding of key areas of equity, equality and diversity, from what it is to how protected characteristics can be ‘protected’, along with the impact of not doing so on individuals and wider society. The following are covered: Equality in law and policy (the Equality Act 2010, the ‘public sector duty’, the All Wales Anti-Racist Action Plan, and related legislation) and the relation of this to social institutions; contrasting aspects of diversity and inequality (including gender, race, disability); contrasting models of equality (equality of opportunity, outcome, capability; recognition and redistribution), and recent developments such as the George Floyd case and the Black Lives Matter movement.
