Content Summary

As the first module to be introduced, there will be an initial immersive element lasting 3 weeks.

This introductory module is designed to introduce students to a range of artistic disciplines, equipment and resources at TCMT.

Strong emphasis will be placed on students learning technical and practical skills to assist students to begin to develop their own, unique visual language and create work on the themes that inspire them.

Part 1

In part 1, weeks 1 and 2, each fast-paced daily session will introduce the basics to a discipline through workshops in which the emphasis is placed on play and experimentation. There will be less a focus on outcome, and more on the discovery of what works or what interests each student.

The overall theme for part 1 is Narrative with students creating works that include location, character, narrative, informing the subject matter for each skill introduced.

Week 1: 2-D Art Disciplines

Introduction to Collage (Digital and Paper), Drawing (Digital and Traditional), and Painting (Wet Media and Digital), and Print.

Week 2: 3-D Art Disciplines

Introduction to Ceramics, Installation, Performance and Socially Engaged Practices, and Photography.

Week 3: Digital and Analogue Disciplines

Introduction to Animation, Game Art, Film, and Sound Art

At the end of part 1 students will review their output and begin to make choices for the direction they wish to take in part 2 when students will begin to experiment and develop ideas and skills during the practical elements of Professional Practice.

Part 2

The 2nd part of the module, delivered in the latter part of the Autumn term will be more directed, depending on student specialism and will be provide more detailed and specialist workshops. During these 3 weeks, students will identify what areas they wish to further develop their art practice. It is recognised that interests will change on a year-to-year basis and this part of the module will be contingent, fluidly adapted according to student interests. The aim overall is for students to develop further skills within their chosen discipline/s adapting them to create experimental artworks.

Part 3

The final part of the module, delivered in the Spring term, will enable students to work on a body of artwork to resolution, evaluate and present a finished, exhibition-ready work.
