Module Aims

To develop a consciousness and understanding of the concept of professional engineering, create an awareness of the code, ethics, and role of a professional engineer in the society with an understanding of the principles of sustainable development and its associated environmental impacts, underpinned by the acquisition of relevant theoretical engineering knowledge. 

To develop an understanding of the fundamentals of construction projects, from inception to practical completion and beyond, awareness of team roles and ability to work as a member of an engineering team, including considerations of component aspects that includes Health & Safety considerations and its relevant Legal framework and regulations for the construction industry. 

Content Summary

Understanding the role of the engineer in society, linking back to professional engineers supporting civilisation and enabling society, both in developed and developing nations. 

Understanding professional engineering ethics, code, and conduct, developing/maintaining personal development plans, working with other construction professionals and stakeholders, and awareness/involvement with professional engineering bodies. 

Engagement with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and demonstrating their attainment with an understanding of waste management in construction projects. 

Introduction to the principles of sustainable development in activities, decision making, selection and specification of resource/materials in the construction industry. 

Introduction to the concept of site investigation, setup, and location prior to a construction project 

Introduction and comprehension of the various technical elements of a construction project and its lifecycle. 

Creating an awareness of the basic types of foundations and ground improvement techniques including the applicable constructions plants. 

Consideration of certain construction project specifics including CDM compliance, sector-appropriate legal frameworks.

LO1 Demonstrate an understanding of the necessary tools for promoting sustainable development and identifying any sustainability/environmental constraints, including the need for sound understanding of the ethical responsibilities and knowledge of the codes and conducts of a professional engineer.
LO2 Understand the fundamentals of construction projects, from inception to completion, including the role and responsibilities of the Civil Engineer as it relates to Health and Safety and the project wider context.
