Module Aims
The module aims to:
• Critically explore creative media-making that centres on cutting-edge communications technology
• Consider debates about the production, consumption, and access to media communications.
• Blend theory and practice that allows student to produce scholarly content communicated in creative ways.
Content Summary
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to a broad range of areas relating to media communications, such as digital media; mobile journalism; AI generated content; VR, AR, and XR; media and disability; and media, environmentalism, and sustainability.
As part of the blending of academic theory and creative practice, students will learn how to make video essays and develop media skills that will allow them to produce creative submissions across the course.
This module will support students’ development as a sustainable practitioner via engagement with Albert Sustainable Production Certification. Discussions and tasks will equip students with a demonstrable general understanding of the science of climate change and its impacts. Students will have the opportunity to identify and articulate the environmental impacts of a production, making reference to a calculated carbon footprint; and students will propose solutions to reduce the environmental impact of a production. Students will also identify strategies that could engage audiences with environmental sustainability.
Finally, this module: a) will adhere to, and engage with, all ethical considerations (as laid out in this document – see ‘H. Ethical Issues’, above); b) when and where appropriate, it will make full use of Faculty-wide teaching expertise and technical support in its endeavour to fully integrate practice with theory.
