Module Aims
To provide a grounding in the use of mythology and literary / artistic classics as sources for theatrical creativity and understanding.
To nurture awareness that the arts are a continuum of which theatre is a part.
Content Summary
The module is a foundation in devised storytelling. Its particular focus is on the theatrical re-working of classic sources from across the arts, which are seen as interconnected. Themes of love, death, adventure, family conflict, justice and hubris found in classics of literature, music and / or the visual arts are rendered into theatrical format. Emphasis is placed upon artistic and contextual research and upon the contemporary. What in the selected classic/s resonates today? The module is studio-based and delivered within an ensemble context. Studio working practices apply. Experiential learning is supported by collaborative practice, artistic and contextual research, critical and ethical reflection, the integration of theory, exposure to the philosophies of specific practitioners and through e-learning on Blackboard. Assessment is through a portfolio.
