Module Aims

To offer a thorough initiation in applied drama skills.

To enable students to research, devise, produce, realise and analyse a sustained community-based applied drama project.

Content Summary

This module explores principles and philosophies of, and approaches to Applied Drama. It includes studio-based taught and community workshop project components. The taught component will explore theories, philosophies, techniques and methods of applied drama, facilitation skills, project planning and analysis, the development of project support materials and devising and production skills. Contribution (participation and engagement) is assessed throughout.

The applied project component takes students out of the university studio. Here, students research an applied drama workshop in a community setting. This workshop project builds on the taught component of the module and will be planned, realised/implemented and evaluated in collaboration with a group of peers. Careful guidance and support will be given to these projects by tutors. The Essay enables students to engage with theoretical perspectives and explore relevant case studies. The community applied drama workshop and the essay are assessed.
