Module Aims
On successful completion, students should have a basic overview of the organisational structure and function of the human body.
All students will have a solid foundation of cellular organisation and communication, biological tissue organisation, and form and function of the major organ systems of the human body. They will also have an introduction to the relevance of disease management, in preparation for the spiralling of curriculum content to Level 5.
This module is delivered through lectures and group-based tasks in theme-specific workshops, to develop understanding and use of anatomical and medical terminology, and a grasp of 3-dimensional anatomy. In order to complete the module, students must be intellectually curious, systematically and logically solving problem-oriented tasks in order to improve understanding of the basic structure and function of the human organism. Use of digital models of anatomy throughout the module will aid digital literacy.
In engaging with the module, students will fully achieve the following level-appropriate Behaviour Domains of the USW Graduate Attributes:
Commercial Awareness: Behaviour 2 Communication: Behaviour 1, 2, 3
Leadership: Behaviour 1, 2, 3
Innovation and Enterprise: Behaviour 1, 2, 3
Project Management: Behaviour 1, 2, 3 Digital Literacy: Behaviour 1
The Capabilities associated with these behaviours are found in the Graduate Attributes table at the end of the descriptor.
Content Summary
Topics covering the organisational levels of the human body will include, but are not limited to:
Cellular physiology and biological tissue organisation – the cellular and extracellular properties of epithelial tissue, connective tissues, muscle tissue and nervous tissue
Structure and function of organ systems – integumentary system, skeletal system, central and peripheral nervous systems, muscular system, lymphatic system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, reproductive systems
Anatomical and medical terminology – anatomical planes and directions, medical/biological prefixes, root words and suffixes.
