Module Aims

  • Engage students in research activity that enables an understanding of issues relevant to their own field of practice.

  • Enable students to develop a critical perspective on the production, dissemination and reception of visual media.

  • Develop writing skills to enable sophisticated communication of ideas in professional contexts

Content Summary

This module provides the opportunity for students to evaluate and critique contexts of visual media pertinent to subjects and concerns pursued within their own practical work. The depth of research required, and the process of its synthesis within an extended critical text, cultivates students' abilities to build on skills developed within work on earlier contextual assignments.

The module content and its written assignment encourages students to reflect critically on the subject of their research and to position their critique of that subject in relation to relevant formal, cultural, social and ideological concerns. Students are further guided, as relevant to the intent of their paper, to critically interrogate aspects of visual media and concerns of representation, authorship, audience and reception.

The module fosters students' abilities to engage in a high level of scholarship largely pursued within independent study, as appropriate to level 6 undergraduate study. Module delivery supports each student in the development of their critical and analytical skills, extending their confidence as a communicator within forms of writing relevant to their individual professional development.
