Module Aims

The module will introduce students to the use of technology in the legal sector; the legal profession, legal processes, institutions and systems

The module will provide a basis for study for students to;

1. Develop a critical understanding of the effect of technology on the legal sector both present and future.  

2. Evaluate the recent trends and use of technology within legal practice and legal services.

3. Critically analyse the digital skills which need to be developed by future practitioners including lawyers, legal engineers

 

Content Summary

The module will cover the following indicative content:

·         The use of cloud computing.

·         Artificial Intelligence including AI driven document management. 

·         Automation including the use of digital assistants. 

·         Big Data. 

·         Remote engagement. 

·         Cyber Security issues. 

·         Challenges to legal process and justice such as digital evidence, meta data, forensic investigation. 

·         Impact and future challenges for the legal profession such as job description, divide between law and information technology. 

·         Professional, ethical, legal, social issues resulting from the use of information technology.
