Module Aims

To consider the relationship between exercise and selected areas of the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular system.

To develop an understanding of selected measurements in cardiovascular physiology and competency in the performance of these measurements.

Content Summary

Anatomy of the heart and cardiac muscle.

The electrical implications of contraction, the electrical axis and the rhythm of the heart.

The ECG at rest and in response to exercise.

Cardiac contraction and the molecular interactions associated with contraction.

Cardiovascular dynamics and loop volume pressure curves.

Central and peripheral haemodynamic function at rest and in response to exercise.

Cerebrovascular haemodynamic function at rest and in response to exercise.

Acute and chronic adaptations of regular exercise training.

Exercise for cardiac rehabilitation.

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CEPT) for health and disease.

Learning Outcomes

# Learning Outcome
LO1 Demonstrate advanced competence and understanding of a range of laboratory skills and assessment procedures in exercise physiology.
LO2 Critically discuss the regulation, adjustment and adaptation of the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems in response to acute and chronic exercise.
LO3 Critically evaluate the role of exercise in the management of a patient following a cardiac event.
