Module Aims

To enhance the students' knowledge and understanding of the application of ethical policing powers, decision making and communication skills.  

To develop the student's ability to support victims and witnesses within the criminal justice system as well as the need for offender management. 

To enhance students’ ability to provide a front-line police response and appropriately deal with a range of diverse and complex incidents and investigations.  

Content Summary

Through a blended learning approach students will gain an understanding of the importance of valuing difference and inclusion, the responsibilities and powers applicable to different policing role.  

Through work-based learning and the use of case studies and set exercises students will develop their decision making and communication skills enabling them to effectively interact with individuals, groups, and communities in various situations. 

Students will explore the appropriate legislation and actions when dealing with the needs of victim and witnesses  

The module includes legislation associated with suspect and offender management, in particular exploring partnership working, alternatives to arrest and the processes associated with custody and bail. 

Through blended learning students will explore the standards with recording crimes and incidents, as well as the influences and procedures associated with ‘charging’ suspects. Taught sessions scaffolded by some online independent learning will introduce students to the criminal justice system, associated legislation and court processes, exploring the importance of building relationships with key partners and stakeholders 

Using immersive learning, including work-based learning students will apply practical policing skills when attending a variety of incidents as a first responder. Identifying and responding appropriately to issues of vulnerability, including their responsibilities at a major or critical incidents. Students will explain the core functions of roads policing and apply appropriate procedures for the disposal of offences committed by road users. 

Through the blended learning approach students will consider the importance of information and intelligence and demonstrate an understanding of practical issues pertaining to the collection process, as well as the retention and sharing of such data.  

During this module, students will engage in blended learning focused on the functions and prerequisites of ethical investigative methods. This includes developing the students understanding of conducting interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects, while carefully considering specific factors such as vulnerability during victim/witness interviews
