Module Aims

To provide students with a critical understanding of contemporary research and practice concerning children’s rights and inclusive practice. 

To consider the approaches and strategies for developing effective inclusive practice. 

 To understand the role of the practitioner in facilitating inclusive practice in a range of settings. 

Content Summary

The importance of a child’s rights as an individual. 

Role of the Children’s Commissioner – monitoring children’s rights The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. 

The current legal framework in UK and Wales in relation to the rights of the child Participation, provision and protection rights – 3P’s Developing children’s participation 

Inclusion and Early Years Policy and Practice: the importance of meeting the needs of individual children; Collaborative practice with other professionals 

Parents and families as partners 

Exploring ethnicity, culture and faith, Gypsy/Traveler Children, Refugee and Asylum Seeking children, childhood poverty and social exclusion, gender issues in inclusive practice 

Theoretical models of ALN/SEN. 

Exploring current good practice in ALN/SEN Exclusion and its associated impact. Exploring multilingual and bilingual issues. 

Concepts of Mental health and effects on inclusivity
