Module Aims

To develop advanced knowledge and skills to critically appraise, evaluate and apply research methods, statistics and epidemiological concepts within specialist community public health nursing School Nursing field of practice.

Content Summary

Key terminology used in epidemiology and research studies such as prevalence, incidence, sensitivity, specificity, false positive and false negatives; Interpreting graphical representation of epidemiological and statistical data;

Calculations used in the assessment of research data such as relative risk, absolute risk, power;

Descriptive and inferential statistical tests and their applications;

Qualitative research on issues that impact on population health and wellbeing such as health outcomes and lifestyle;

Critically appraise quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research,

Ethical issues around the collection, interpretation, dissemination and use of public health research and data;

Systematically locating research studies using robust search strategies to answer questions generated by public health practice;

Identifying gaps in research, evidence and policy that impact on public health nursing practice and influence how to address this, recognising the need for further study

Generating appropriate research questions considering the Population or Patient of interest, the type of intervention, any comparisons and the type of outcome that is of interest (PICO);

Critical analysis of public health evidence using appropriate frameworks to inform practice and improve healthy development and wellbeing of children, families and communities; influence determinants of health and cycles of deprivation and understand the lived experience of infants and children

Participate and utilise new areas of research across interdisciplinary and interagency teams related to public health priorities and interventions

Communication and dissemination of outcomes, audit, research and evaluation, making recommendations for specialist community public health nursing in school nursing field of practice through professional and peer reviewed processes

Communication and dissemination of research findings to children, parents, carers and communities to improve health outcomes

LO2 Apply critical appraisal techniques to quantitative and qualitative research studies and be able to synthesize a body of knowledge relating to Specialist Community Public Health Nursing School Nursing practice.
