Module Aims

To critically evaluate the principles, policies, legislative and ethical frameworks relating to vulnerable groups, risk assessment and protection. 

To critically examine and explore ways in which the SCPHN practitioner can effectively manage risk involving individuals, families and communities within an inter-agency framework

Content Summary

Professional judgement to observe, recognise and respond to signs of abuse and neglect across the life course, recognising that individual safeguarding needs will differ.

Evidence-based person-centred interventions to promote healthy relationships and minimise risks of domestic abuse, child maltreatment and other forms of abuse within the family and the developmental impact of parental conflict on children

Understanding the range and types of abuse and its impact on children and families 

Relevant legal, regulatory and governance requirements, policies and ethical frameworks as applied to specialist community public health practice, differentiating between the devolved legislatures of the UK   

Evidence-based approach to identify vulnerability, risk  and inequality identifying those needing support and those at risk Influence and support fairness, equity and social justice and challenge discriminatory practices and behaviours. 

Policy and national targets to safeguard and improve health and wellbeing?and determining prevention and early intervention strategies

Developing strengths based therapeutic relationships, protective factors and partnership working with parents and carers

Developing and enhancing Professional Curiosity

Identifying, assessing and managing an individual in need of protection, report, escalate and share with peers, inter-disciplines and statutory agencies 

Using advanced and Effective communication skills and information sharing

Recognition of unconscious bias, of stigma and cultures that limit effective safeguarding 

Understanding the role of Advocacy and Allyship 

Reasonable adjustments for individuals, groups and communities
