Module Aims

To further develop the knowledge and understanding of the student related to concepts of public health including local, national and global perspectives. 

To support students to critically explore, analyse and synthesise epidemiological and demographic data to identify health inequalities and social and behavioural determinants that impact on health outcomes of populations.

To ensure students identify and evaluate national public health priorities and policy to recommend health promoting initiatives to improve the health and wellbeing of community populations.

Content Summary

The content will critically appraise and examine: 

Epidemiological and demographic data, social and behavioural determinants of health and health inequalities.

Public Health policy critique and evaluation.

Sustainable development goals, devolved government strategy and legal frameworks.

Political and professional drivers of health.  

Environment and eco-logical health influences

Genetics and genomics. 

Health cultures and practices, perceived bias and barriers to promoting health and inclusive engagement with diverse populations. 

Communicable disease, immunisations and vaccinations 

Non-communicable disease, diet, physical activity, substance use, sexual health, oral health, mental and emotional health, unintended injury. 

Health needs assessment and community profiling. 

Theories and approaches to health promotion, health communication and health literacy in the context of individual, community and population health. 

Ethical approaches to health communication including bias and stigma. 

Inter-professional working, participation, collaboration and community engagement. 

Evidenced based interventions to improve health outcomes. 

Community networks, social prescribing and asset-based solutions. 

Advocacy and influence on policy change. 

Evaluation methods, with targeted populations, to measure health outcomes and viability of interventions. 

Determine how to assess and manage major incidents and outbreaks including contamination and communicable disease across local or national boundaries. 

Plan for emergencies and pandemic threats to population health taking account of the direct and wider risk, impacts and hierarchy of controls on health and wellbeing and service provision
