Module Aims
The main aims of the module are:
To develop core technical and creative skills in photography, video, and audio production for sports journalism.
To enable students to apply visual and aural storytelling techniques in producing short-form multimedia content suitable for digital platforms.
To encourage ethical awareness, critical reflection, and creative decision-making in multi-platform sports reporting.
Content Summary
This module challenges students to tell the story of a live sporting event through sound and image. They will learn how to capture atmosphere, action, and emotion using photography, audio, and video — and how to adapt those outputs for digital platforms. Through practical workshops and newsroom-style exercises, they will explore how visual and aural storytelling techniques can bring sport to life for diverse audiences. The module focuses on technical proficiency, creativity, and ethical responsibility in multimedia journalism. It develops the production and editing skills essential for professional sports media practice, preparing you for more advanced broadcast and content production modules in later years. By the end of the module, students will understand how to create engaging, multi-platform content that meets professional standards of quality, accuracy, and storytelling coherence.

Assessment Criteria
| Assessment Category | Assessment Type | Description | Duration | Word Count | Weight (%) | Best of? | Pass Mark |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asynchronous Assessment | Portfolio 1 | 6–8 captioned photographs, 2–3 minute audio bulletin, and 1 short-form video (approx. 2,000–2,500 words equivalent) Requires students to create short-form photography, audio, and video content, simulating real-world newsroom workflows. | 3 | 2500 | 70 | No | 40 |
| Asynchronous Assessment | Critique | 5-minute recorded audio reflection (approx. 1,000 words equivalent) Builds on the above by encouraging reflective and analytical thinking. The audio reflection fosters student agency and self-regulation, aligning with the Framework’s principle that assessment should promote continuous learning rather than final judgement. Students articulate the reasoning behind their editorial and technical choices, reinforcing professional accountability and personal growth. | 5 | 1000 | 30 | No | 40 |
