Module Aims

The main aims of the module are:

  • To deepen understanding of the factors shaping children’s and young people’s mental health through critical engagement with theory, research, and practice.

To explore and evaluate therapeutic approaches, including CBT, to promote positive mental health and support those experiencing emotional or behavioural challenges.

Content Summary

This module offers an advanced and engaging exploration of the factors that shape mental health and wellbeing in children and young people. You will critically examine key theories, research, and contemporary issues surrounding emotional development, resilience, and the impact of adversity.

Building on your previous learning, the module will develop your understanding of how professionals work therapeutically with children and young people in a range of contexts. You will explore ethical and professional considerations, as well as evidence-informed approaches to promoting positive mental health and supporting those experiencing difficulties.

A particular focus will be given to understanding and evaluating different therapeutic models, including cognitive behavioural therapy. Through critical analysis and reflection, you will consider how these approaches can be applied in practice to support the wellbeing of children and adolescents.
