Module Aims

The main aims of the module are:

  • To develop students’ understanding of the professional field of Arts, Health and Wellbeing.

  • To support students to create artwork for exhibition informed by both an individual artistic identity and the needs and interests of multiple stakeholders in a healthcare setting.

  • To support students in reflecting on how their arts and health research and creative interventions inform their art-making process, shaping the development of their final artwork and deepening their understanding of themselves as Artists.

Content Summary

Arts in Health invites you to contribute to the exciting and rapidly developing field of Arts and Health. You will learn how creative interventions are shaping healthcare locally and nationally through critically examining the evidence base that demonstrates the value of the arts for health. These interventions can range from uplifting visual artworks that enhance hospital environments to participatory sessions that foster comfort, connection, and joy.

In this module you will have the opportunity to make a difference to patients, staff and visitors within Wales by responding to a brief from a health setting, for example, designing and delivering creative sessions for patients living with dementia.  Through these powerful, real-world experiences, you’ll gain insight into the realities of living with different health conditions, the challenges faced by staff working in health, but also the power of person-centred and compassionate practice.

You will negotiate the challenges and opportunities of creating art that is both authentic to your artistic identity and meets a professional brief. Your journey culminates with the exhibition of your new artwork in the health setting inspired by your time with patients and staff
