Module Aims

The main aims of the module are:

  • To introduce students to the key theories, practices, and methods that underpin effective coaching.

  • To develop students’ ability to plan, deliver and reflect on inclusive and engaging coaching sessions.

  • To support students in forming their coaching identity through self-awareness, critical reflection and practical experience.

Content Summary

This module gives you the core foundations of football coaching and the tools you need to plan, deliver, and evaluate purposeful, inclusive, and engaging coaching sessions. You will dive into the essentials of coaching philosophy, motivation, communication, planning, and the stages of learning all while developing the behaviours that define effective modern coaches.

Through a blend of practical delivery, focused theory, and guided reflection, you will learn how to design coaching environments that challenge, inspire, and develop players. You’ll experience what it means to lead a session, adapt on the spot, and communicate clearly with individuals and groups.

You will also be introduced to reflective practice, helping you become a critically aware, adaptable coach who understands not just what to coach, but why and how. By applying theory directly to practice, this module supports you in building your professional identity and developing the transferable skills needed to thrive in work-based learning and across the coaching and sport industry.
