Module Aims

  • Develop students’ understanding of leadership and management skills and practices required to be successful in sporting organisations  

  • Enable students to analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of leadership approaches within diverse sport settings  

  • To enable students to reflect on their own professional practice, in relation to leading and managing others, and identify key areas for their own development 

Content Summary

This module aims to introduce students to contemporary leadership concepts and skills, that are necessary to be successful when working as a professional within the sports industry. Students will gain knowledge of a range of sport leadership and management theories and approaches; develop an understanding of the various leadership skills that are required, such as effective communication, building relationships and leading others; and gain hands-on experience of various leadership and management challenges via practical scenarios, case study evaluation and challenge-based activities. Career exploration is embedded within the module, helping students understand workforce roles and develop their professional identity. The module provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their professional development and current strengths and weaknesses and increase their awareness of how to become more effective in the sports industry workplace.
