Module Aims
The main aims of the module are:
To equip students with the knowledge and practical skills to design, deliver, and critically evaluate sport-specific rehabilitation programmes that support safe and effective return to play, work, or recreational activity.
To enable students to implement, monitor, and appraise evidence-based injury prevention strategies, including screening and performance monitoring, to reduce reinjury risk and optimise long-term athlete health.
To develop students’ ability to apply critical thinking and decision-making frameworks in adapting rehabilitation and prevention programmes according to individual progress, functional goals, and sport-specific or occupational demands.
Content Summary
The module provides students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to design, deliver, and critically evaluate sport-specific rehabilitation and injury prevention programmes across the late to pre-discharge phases. Students will develop criterion-based rehabilitation plans tailored to the individual needs of athletes, workers, or recreational participants, incorporating functional goals and reintegration into periodised training programmes. Emphasis is placed on delivering rehabilitation sessions that address movement, skill, and performance constraints while applying structured decision-making frameworks to ensure safe and effective return to play, work, or recreational activity.
Students will critically review rehabilitation outcomes and adapt programmes according to patient progress and contextual factors. In addition, the module focuses on the implementation and evaluation of ongoing injury prevention strategies. Students will conduct screening test batteries to identify intrinsic risk factors, develop sport-specific injury prevention interventions, and monitor athlete readiness and performance using appropriate tools and metrics.
The module encourages critical appraisal of rehabilitation and prevention outcomes, fostering evidence-based practice aimed at optimising long-term athlete health, reducing reinjury risk, and enhancing performance. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and applied practice, students will gain the competence and confidence to support safe, effective, and performance-driven rehabilitation and injury prevention strategies in sport and exercise contexts.
