Module Aims

  • To understand the role of planning and development with reference to the built environment. 

  • To explain development principles through broader discourse and disciplines. 

  • To outline the role of built environment law and legislation in relation to urban planning and development.  

Content Summary

The module begins with an overview of planning and development, with reference to the social, political and economic aspects of the built environment. The module introduces development control and planning permission, land acquisition and registry, as well as the role of stakeholders in public consultation and involvement. It considers how development and construction projects are consulted on, approved, contested, and challenged through social and political processes. 

The module examines the broader discourse of urban planning and development, drawing on key planning concepts and visions. It incorporates associated urban development processes, including redevelopment and regeneration, safety in urban design, accessibility, and inclusive urban development. It refers to urban planning and development principles and law, with reference to relevant UK legislation.
