Module Aims

  • To apply and reflect on transferable professional skills within a real-world work or civic environment.

  • To analyse and apply knowledge and practices to professional scenarios or civic initiatives.

  • To evaluate the development of professional identity and graduate attributes to enhance employability.

Content Summary

The short and summer placement module offers students the opportunity to complete an industry placement, internship or civic engagement opportunity. These experiences are designed to be applied to real-world industrial or civic contexts, develop graduate attributes, sector awareness, and employability. Opportunities may be self-sourced or accessed through the University’s careers portal.

Before starting the placement, students participate in introductory workshops, focused on teamwork, communication, and professional personality profiling through challenge-based scenarios. Throughout the placement, students receive academic supervision to ensure their experience is reflective, professionally enriching, and academically relevant, bridging the gap between their studies and the professional working environment.

Placements must meet one of three key criteria: alignment with the student’s academic discipline; the development of graduate attributes; or a positive impact on society through civic engagement. Students are required to comply with relevant University policies and guidelines, while also adhering to the host organisation’s policies. Short and summer placement roles are advertised on the University’s careers portal or may be self-sourced.
