Module Aims
The main aims of the module are:
To provide students with the knowledge of assessment tools, models and methods used in the field when Working with Children and Families.
To learn how to engage families in activities that will be beneficial to the effective functioning of the family.
Content Summary
You will be presented with learning opportunities in the form of activities and the underpinning theory based on and linked to authentic issues and challenges that are experienced by individuals across life, including children, young people, families, and communities.
You will examine recent relevant pedagogical research, social pedagogy approaches and these, as well as policies at organisational, local, national and international levels, will inform the module content. Furthermore, the content reflects models and methods used across Wales with children and families.
You will be exposed to a variety of different case studies and scenarios and will meet with professionals from the field to deepen their understanding of these methods and processes. You will develop practical skills alongside these methods, for example, you will practice doing referrals, practice having what matters? conversations drawing on skills learnt at level 4.
To work with children and families effectively, you will need to not only understand these models and approaches but you will need to have a good understanding of how they play out in the setting. An opportunity to practice these sometimes difficult conversations, delivery methods and to have resources ready will put you in a strong position. You will be able to put together a toolkit of activities that you can pull on in the workplace. The more exposure you will have to case studies which outline the complex difficulties families face, the better prepared you are for placement and subsequently, the world of work.
You are expected to complete 40 hours of practice learning for this module which is underpinned by the Social Pedagogy Standards and Charter (SPPA, 2022) and the PCS model (Thompson, 2021) of the culture and community dimension.
