  • To provide the opportunity for students to reflect upon outdoor learning, games, and play approaches to development in children, young people, families, and communities.

Content Summary

Unlock your potential with a hands-on, adventure-filled module designed to inspire your work with children, young people, families, and communities. This dynamic challenge-based module will empower you to spot opportunities, spark creativity, and harness the power of play, games, adventure education, and outdoor learning to bring social pedagogic principles to life.

You’ll explore how play, games, and outdoor experiences shape development and wellbeing, while discovering how social pedagogy can transform your approach to working with children, young people, families, and communities. Through engaging classroom learning, you’ll master the theory, then step outside to put it into action through three unforgettable days of practical, skills-based sessions.

Get ready to immerse yourself in:

  • Bushcraft and outdoor learning that connect people with nature

  • Climbing and gorge walking to boost confidence and resilience

  • Canoeing and water-based activities that build teamwork and trust

This isn’t just about studying—it’s about doing. By the end of the module, you’ll have the knowledge, confidence, and hands-on skills to bring adventure, creativity, and child-centred learning into every aspect of your professional practice.

You will have the opportunity to use your learning and apply this in the context of your placement.  This will give you the opportunity to try things out and holistically reflect on what works in practice before your final assessment.

This module will feature the opportunity for interprofessional practice with sister professions:  Youth Work, Social work, Public service and Sports development.  This will give students the opportunity to train together, skill share and network inter-professionally.

Students are expected to complete 40 hours of practice learning for this module which is underpinned by the Social Pedagogy Standards and Charter (SPPA, 2022) and the PCS model (Thompson, 2021) of the culture and community dimension.
