Module Aims

The main aims of the module are: 

  • Aim 1: To critically explore the role of football as a tool for social change, examining how sport contributes to global development agendas, including health, education, inclusion, and crime prevention. 

  • Aim 2: To critically analyse the design, delivery, and evaluation of football for development programmes, using contemporary theory, frameworks, case studies, and stakeholder perspectives across diverse contexts. 

  • Aim 3: To develop students’ professional awareness and ethical understanding, preparing them to engage with real-world challenges and contribute meaningfully to football for development initiatives within a societal context. 

Content Summary

Football for Development builds upon knowledge you will develop at Level 4, equipping you with a more specific understanding of issues related to football development and football for development. You will explore how football can be a powerful vehicle for social change. Within this module, you will examine how football can be used to tackle global challenges such as inequality, health, education, inclusion, and crime prevention both locally and internationally. Through studying relevant contemporary theory, real-world case studies and current frameworks, you will examine the approaches used to engage members of society through football and football related activities. You will develop the ability to apply inclusive, evidence-informed approaches to football development in a community setting. The module contributes to the overall course by preparing you for the complexities of contemporary football development roles and supports employability across grassroots, community, and global, development-based environments.
