Module Aims
The main aims of the module are:
Aim 1: Develop key practical skills necessary to work safely and effectively in a laboratory environment.
Aim 2: Learn the core concepts of genetics, eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell biology and how they contribute to the functioning of an organism.
Content Summary
This module teaches you the core concepts in genetics, cell biology and microbiology. Interactive workshops will provide you with the foundational knowledge to understand the importance of DNA in the functioning of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. You will explore eukaryotic cells right from the molecular building blocks to the structure and function of specialised cell types. Prokaryotes their structure, growth requirements and role in disease will be discussed allowing you to understand how prokaryotes and eukaryotes differ as well as how they may interact.
You will get to get hands on in the laboratory learning how to work with DNA, microscopes, organelles and bacteria whilst picking up key laboratory skills. Engaging in laboratory classes will provide you with the skills needed to excel in future laboratory work.
This module will set you up for your future studies genetics, cell biology and microbiology both theoretically and practically.
