Module Aims
The main aims of the module are:
Aim 1: To analyse the relationship between form and function enabling students to evaluate how specific anatomical structures and physiological systems within the phylum Chordata have evolved as adaptive solutions to environmental challenges.
Aim 2: To develop advanced practical and diagnostic skill providing students with the practical skills in biological dissection and comparative morphology, allowing them to accurately identify, illustrate, and interpret the evolutionary development of organ systems across diverse taxa.
Aim 3: To synthesize the relationship between geological history and Chordate diversification, fostering an integrated understanding of how environmental drivers shaped the major morphological transitions observed in extinct and extant clades
Content Summary
This module offers a comprehensive exploration of the relationship between animal form and function, examining how physiological systems and anatomical structures have evolved to meet the demands of diverse environments. Beyond theoretical frameworks, the module places a heavy emphasis on hands-on learning through complimentary practical sessions. You will engage in detailed dissections, comparative morphology labs, to visualise the evolutionary story and development of various taxa. Ranging from the efficiency of respiratory exchange in aquatic life to the musculoskeletal adaptations required for terrestrial locomotion. Combining Earth history with anatomical form and physiological function you will appreciate the evolution and be able to appreciate the comparative morphological characteristics and lifestyles of the major extant and extinct clades of the phylum Chordata.
