Module Aims
To introduce students to the principles of character acting and performance in animation.
To develop students’ ability to communicate emotion, personality and narrative intent through body mechanics, facial expression and timing.
To encourage research, observation and iterative practice in the development of believable animated character performances.
Content Summary
This module introduces the principles of character performance in animation, focusing on acting, emotion and personality expressed through movement. Building on the animation, movement and storytelling foundations established earlier in Level 4, you will explore how character design, body mechanics, facial expression and performance choices contribute to believable animated acting.
The module begins with the development of an original character concept intended for animation performance. You will research and design a character, analyse dialogue and performance intent, and produce a character development portfolio exploring personality, expression and suitability for animation. In the second part of the module, you will apply core animation principles to create a series of performance-based animation exercises, developing your ability to communicate emotion, intention and character through movement. Emphasis is placed on timing, weight, expression and emotional clarity. You will have significant creative choice in the development of character concepts, dialogue selection, performance interpretation and acting approaches, enabling you to explore individual interests while developing distinctive animated performances.
By the end of the module, you will have developed an understanding of how animators create engaging and believable performances that connect with audiences. As a Level 4 module, Acting for Animation establishes the character performance and acting skills that underpin later modules in advanced animation production and professional animation practice.
